This weeks match was away to Dunkirk FC at Nottingham. Like Ivanhoe,
Dunkirk are playing their first season at their new ground.
The day was very overcast and cold, and due
to earlier games finishing late, the kick off was delayed by about 20
minutes. This unfortunately meant that the second half was played in
very poor light.
The game started with both teams having
an equal share of the play, but it was Dunkirk who found the net first
with about 15 minutes of the game gone. The ball found one of their
players free in the middle of the Ivanhoe box, and he struck a low shot
in to the left hand corner beating a stranded Dave Kenning. Within 5
minutes, Nick Glynn managed to beat the Dunkirk offside trap to find
himself with only their keeper to beat. Unfortunately, he only managed
to direct his shot straight at their keeper. 10 minutes later, Nick
Glynn once again beat the offside trap and found himself yet again with
only their keeper to beat.........unfortunately, it was proving not to
be his day and once again he hit his shot straight at the Dunkirk
keeper. The rest of the half was played out relatively evenly, and the
teams reached half time with Dunkirk in the lead by one goal.
The second half started much as the first
one ended. Ivanhoe started to push for an equaliser, which started to
leave them exposed at the back. Defensively, Ivanhoe were very solid,
but 15 minutes in to the second half Tony Donaghay had to go off with a
strained hamstring. Darren styles moved to right back, Iain Ross moved
to left back and John Lennon came on to play at left midfield. Both
sides were pushing hard for the second goal of the game, and it was to
be Ivanhoe who had the first clear chance. Lee Edwards worked himself
free of the Dunkirk defence and found himself with only the Dunkirk
keeper to beat, but as in the first half he only managed to hit his shot
directly at the keeper. Dunkirk responded by playing a long ball forward
which found one of there forwards who shot at goal. Dave Kenning made an
excellent save, but the rebound fell to another Dunkirk player who shot
from a tight angle to score Dunkirk's second of the game.
Ivanhoe couldn't find a way back in to
the game, and the match ended 2-0 to Dunkirk.
