Ashby Ivanhoe Veterans originate from a group of 'father’s' who enrolled
their children in to the David Hunt Soccer School, and who decided to
get together and play charity games for certain causes. Interest started to
grow among the team members and it was decided to form an actual team
and establish a club identity.
A
team member had links with Heather St Johns Football Club, and they were
approached to see if they would facilitate a team that would be playing
in a Veterans league. An agreement was reached, and the team took on the
identity of Heather St Johns Veterans FC.
The
Veterans league is for players who are 35 years old and over. There are
many leagues operating throughout the UK, and Heather joined the
Nottingham Veterans League in 2003.
At
the end of the 2004\2005 season, Heather St Johns FC took the decision
to withdraw their support for the Veterans team, which left the team
without a ground and an identity. Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club, which was
founded in 1948, were approached and asked if they would consider
supporting a Veterans team within their club. Agreement was reached, and
they very kindly agreed to support the Veterans, which meant the team
now had a new ground located at Hood Park Leisure Centre in Ashby, in
which to play at, and a new identity. The team were now
re-named Ashby Ivanhoe Veterans FC.
The
Veterans games are held every fortnight. The Vet’s league is a natural
progression for players who feel that they are at an age where they no
longer wish to be playing every week. With this in mind, the standard of
teams playing within the Veterans league is high, and the leagues are
going from strength to strength.
